Hey All!!! Well I got to interview author of "Sectors" and "Raising Riley" Brick Marlin. I asked him a few questions going with when did he choose to become a Writer. After the interview I have a little bit about what Sectors is.
How long have you been writing?
As long as I can remember. I recollect creating a lot of horrifying characters and dark worlds while growing up. This also included playing Dungeons and Dragons with my friends, soon becoming the Dungeon Master, leading players into fantasy worlds I invented.
When did you first realize you wanted to become an author?
I think it was when I was in middle school. I had always had the dream of writing for living; though, as of yet, have not captured that prize. Much like many award-winning authors have to do, I have to work a day job.
How do you come up with the ideas for your books?
Sometimes the ideas come out of nowhere and smack me in the head; other times I may pick up an idea by reading a book or having a conversation with someone. Odd thing, the Muse's relationship is to a writer!
What is your writing process? Do you plan out your story before hand or do you just write?
I hardly ever outline and usually have a good start for the beginning of the tale and have somewhat of an idea how the tale will end - however, as the tale progresses, allowing the characters to tell the story,the book ends differently.
How do you come up with your Characters are they based off of people you know or do you choose traits you like for that character and it just happens?
Sometimes my characters are based after other personalities I encounter on a daily basis; other times I usually try to put my own spin on a character's persona.
What in your opinion is one of the best parts of being an author?
To live within the flesh of fictional characters, enjoying their adventures, and digging the fact readers revel in tales written by me.
How did you publish? Did you go through a publishing house or did you self publish? And how did you choose which to do?
I've always went through small presses, never went the self-publishing route. As much experience as I've had with small presses, I feel they do such a great job for the author, and perhaps more than a larger publishing house would do.
Where do you think your books would be considered? YA, NA or Adult?
I do believe my novels could be read by a wide expanse of readers, not being only for adults, or only YA.
Do you have a favorite book you've written?
SECTORS would be my favorite book, because that was the tale in which I began writing more inside the folds of the odd and the bizarre.
Do you have any advice to young writers out there?
Discipline yourself to write each and every day and read as many books as you can, whether it be in the genre your are trying to write in, or not.
How do you feel books have changed in the past 30 years?
The only change I could point out is the invention of the ebooks. Even though I do not mind reading off a Kindle, I still have the undesirable love of holding a book in my hands and flipping the pages as I read the story.
How long does it take you on average to write your books?
If each of the teeth fit into the wheel's grooves nicely and the conveyor belt hums along, it takes about three months for me to complete a novel.
Where do you hope to be in 10 years as far as your career goes?
I hope to have many more books written in the "Transitional Delusions" series, in which I already have a total of two completed and am beginning on the third. This series is after the demolition of the world, after what people refer to as the Shift, leaving a dark, apocalyptic world in its wake where large corporations rule the planet.
